| Ladakh lies at an
altitude of more than 3500m. It waits with adventure and beauty
to all that come and visit. Tucked between two of the world's
greatest mountain ranges, the Himalayas and the Karakoram, this
forbidden valley lay hidden from the outside world. Ladakh was
before inaccessible because of its hostile terrain and later
was banned to tourists due to its strategic geographic position.
Its snow-clad peaks, translucent lakes, barren terrain and mystic
culture have attracted tourists and explorers from all over
the world.
Trekking in Ladakh
For trekking in this reason one need to be physically fit and
be prepared to face the austere of backcountry travel as well.
This region covered in intensely cold waves and snow i.e. extreme
wintry conditions. The fluctuations in the day and night temperature
takes its toll. The best season to go on trekking expeditions
in this region is between July and September.
Depending upon the time and budget, we can design trekking programs
for you. We will take care of all arrangements including camping
gear, provisions, portage, staff and all other matters. As the
terrain is inhospitable and ecology very fragile, it is advisable
to take as much provision and fuel as possible.
The Changtang Plains
- Rupshu
Following a wonderful route, this trek offers a very different
landscape as you approach the high Tibetan plateau. Lush meadows,
vast grazing grounds, natural springs and lakes make it the
ideal haunt for roving shepherds (Changpas) who live here. You
may see wild asses (Skyangs) which roam these high plateaus.
We end the trip at Tsomoriri (4550 m), a beautiful high altitude
lake that is also breeding ground to bare headed geese, brahminy
ducks and other species. The altitude of the trek is all between
4200m and 5200m.
Zanskar
Trek
With its succession of high passes and awe-inspiring environment,
this popular trek is a classic - the experience of a lifetime.
Starting from Darch in Lahaul/Spiti we cross the snow bound
5090m Shingo La pass into Zanskar. In the desolate, harsh and
arid desert land of this region, the numerous Zanskari settlements
we come across are marvelous oases in the wilderness. The rocky
landscape is a kaleidoscope of colors under the changing sun.
The Zanskar River cuts its way through it all, across flatlands
and sown canyons, adding a surrealistic touch to the scene.
We finally walk into Lamayuru where the trek ends. En route,
we see monasteries built as early as the 10th century. Among
the ones we visit are Phuktal, Bardan and Karsha.
Although physically taxing, this trek is a tremendously popular,
being both a challenge and the ultimate experience for the trekking
enthusiast.
Ladakh
Ultimate Trek
A very interesting route beginning at the famous Lamayuru monastery,
you walk up the less traveled Ripchar Valley with its small
villages, nomadic settlements and pastures where you see a wide
variety of flowers and many species of birds. Season for this
trek is from the end of July to end of August. We cross some
high passes with excellent views of the Karakoram and the Zanskar
Mountains. The initial part of the trek ends at Chilling, a
small village and the only one where Ladakhi metal work is carried
out. From Chilling, we cross the river by cable pulley.
Different sets of ponies are on the other side of the river
to carry our gear. We then continue on to Markha Valley - considered
one of the most beautiful valleys in Ladakh. Here you pass through
several Ladakhi settlements as you walk through their fields
and observe their life style. Several river crossings are involved,
but these are not dangerous. Crossing several more passes, through
gorges and wide opens pastures; we end the trek at Matho village.
Here we visit the monastery built on a hill between Stok and
Stakna, the only monastery belonging to the Sakyapa order. It
is worth visiting this monastery for the beautiful view it has
over the valley.
